Mouths to Feed

For this final project, I chose to portray a kitchen-esque observation. This is of the domestic realm. The size of the work is relatively small scale in order to impose an intimacy with the viewer, since they will have a closer relationship with the intricate threading piece.

The sewing was done on turquoise organza, which is a thin sheer fabric made from silk, that is embellished with a spread of brown spots.

The transparency helped me achieve the accurate form of the object I wished to depict, a teapot. This traditionally female-used kitchen appliance pouring out spots (or drops) will communicate the idea of a woman’s contributing role in society through the ages. This is done not only through its depiction, but also by the quality of the material and the feminine craft chosen, being threading.

The concomitantly selected colors: light blue and brown create an airy palette and have an earthy aesthetic that easily reminds one of the home. It also works perfectly to delineate this delicate item on a diaphanous canvas.

Finally, this is not a work that deconstructs stereotypes; it is feminine in every aspect. The piece only attempts to depict woman’s never-ending benefactions, the giving that never stops, and the countless sacrifices made in the domicile.  Therefore it is free from harsh contrasts and dark nostalgic tones. The artwork hence appears translucent, featherweight, and a tad whimsical.
